A stands for Arts
A stands for Arts is a Lit Up programme initiative that consists of Art and science workshops wherein 10th through 12th grade students with an interest in drawing, music, writing and/or theatre can acquire or hone in on their art practice skills by applying them to science and/or health projects. During A stands for Arts workshops, students closely contact with and learn from science illustration professionals and scientists with an interest in drawing, music, poetry or prose and improv theatre, and learn basic art expression skills by applying them to various STEAM projects.
Why mix Arts and Science?
Programmes that incorporate the arts into the STEM/STEAM curriculum have been shown to increase creativity, improve academic performance, increase motor skills, enhance visual learning, and boost higher decision-making skills.
STEM vs STEAM Education
Reintegrating art and design into education has been demonstrated to increase the happiness and well-being of students, and to result in better problem-solving skills and increased creativity and innovation, with the added bonus that it may also help encourage more participation by women and other minorities in what have been white male-dominated areas.
We at the CBR believe that exposing Oeiras students to opportunities to inject and work on their artistic skills in the context of discussions and projects that deal with major science and health challenges may contribute to the development of essential skills like collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking, while also enhancing a student's flexibility, adaptability, productivity, responsibility, and innovation.
A stands for Arts workshops take place during school (winter, spring, summer) vacations and last several days (up to a week).
Prospective students need not have experience: just bring your enthusiasm for science and/or the arts and your creativity!
Soon we will have more info here on CBR´s A stands for Arts initiative and application conditions/calendar.
